Last night I woke up at 3 a.m. to the sound of a coyote yipping so close that I swore it was right outside our bedroom! I hopped up and ran to the door...nothing outside our bedroom, but I went into the living room and opened the french door...Boulder came zooming in (I had let him out an hour before...typical evening) and I heard the coyote SUPER LOUD on the hillside next to the house. He or she seriously sounded only twenty feet away. It is really an otherworldly sound--calling out to the other coyotes somewhere, but I don't want even one coyote on our property! So I stood there on the terrace (no way was I venturing off the terrace) trying to figure out what to do. Then I just hissed very loudly: "PPPPSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!" and suddenly there was complete silence, which was a bit unnerving...he or she was close enough to hear ME! I'm not thrilled about having coyotes so close...not for the hens, for Boulder, for the dogs or even for the donkeys (a pack of coyotes could be really bad). So I need to now figure out some kind of protection to protect the inhabitants of The Lazy Vegan...maybe a pellet gun. Randy thought we could run out with a big stick, but somehow I can't visualize that. Anyhow, I went back to sleep with Boulder safely inside and of course immediately started having dreams of viscious foxes and coyotes trying to get into the house!
