A Little Heatwave & Happy International Rabbit Day at the Lazy Vegan!

The ad above was for one of the many celebrations going on in honor of International Rabbit Day!
It seems almost impossible to believe that just last weekend I was typing all about the first rain of the season...this week we were hit with a mini heatwave and I hope it is the LAST one that we have to swelter through for a long, long time! Wasabi hates the heat and so do I. Today is International Rabbit Day!! The perfect day to take the bun to the bunny playground! Wasabi had a good time mingling with her pals today, although she got a bit bossy with some of the new buns that are up for adoption, and even tried to nip one of them. So we had to leave early. But she wasn't nearly as ill-behaved as Nicolas, the tiny spitfire still awaiting adoption...he always has to go for several "time-outs" and one time I had to grab him and hold him to calm him down...and then he nipped me on the hand! The bunny playground isn't always a piece of cake! Next week I plan on bringing in some homemade vegan banana bread to celebrate Wasabi's first birthday...so, yes...the blog will be all about Wasabi next week, too. It is a good thing that all the animals are equally loved (if not quite equally showed off with photos) here at the Lazy Vegan! Check out the impromptu performance one evening last week by Karina and the foreman...Wasabi (and the rest of the crew) loved it...video at bottom!
Saying hello to Spencer.

Chinning the leopard print tunnel to mark her spot!
Bad boy Nicolas gets a time-out!
Wasabi decided to have some privacy in the tunnel for a bit.

Some more fun moments on the deck! Since it was so hot this week, Wasabi spent the days in the kitchen with the house all closed up and cool...and then when the breezes picked up in the evening, we sat out with her on the deck. Not a bad life!

The dogs looked out at the bun on the deck.

Look at those back "thumpers"!

Yes, we're STILL on a little tiny diet...
Just hoppin' about!
Checking in with "Buddy".

There's nothing like dining out!

Time for the Ton of Fun Bun Run!
Toby worried me when he stopped eating for a day...but then thankfully regained his appetite the next day.
Fast asleep with "Baby" and "Buddy".
Waking up.

Grooming time!

You can see why Wasabi is so attached to "Baby".

A perfect pair of fallen leaves.

Staying cool by the frozen water bottle.

Lots of dust bath activity went on this week!

Adorable Bravo!

Cooling off in the early evening.
Paco loves to drag the sweet grain pan around!

SILLY DONKEYS!!

Wasabi and Boulder were really cute together this week!

Kisses from Boulder!
Wasabi did this hilarious routine of grooming Buddy in front of Boulder.

Boulder was being a really good sport!

More bonding time with Bravo!

International Rabbit Day
International Rabbit Day is an international day which promotes the protection and care of rabbits both domestic and wild. On International Rabbit Day, we think about the many ways that rabbits bring joy to our lives, and also the many ways in which they are harmed, by hunting, eating, medical experimentation, product testing, fur-farming, and living isolated lives in outdoor hutches. House Rabbit Society's mission states that "ALL rabbits are valuable as individuals, regardless of breed purity, temperament, state of health, or relationship to humans. The welfare of all rabbits is our primary consideration. In line with our mission, we are against the exploitation of rabbits...Domestic rabbits are companion animals and should be afforded at least the same individual rights, level of care, and opportunity for longevity as commonly afforded to dogs and cats who live as human companions."

First Official Rain of the Season!

We had the first official rain of the season at the Lazy Vegan...and suddenly I am remembering what life is like when things are...well, wet! I spent a long time cleaning out the barn and adding fresh pine and cedar shavings, since the donks hang out there for shelter when it rains hard enough. They wasted no time in making the barn "their own" by peeing in their special pee spots! The foreman replaced a broken window in the cabin and in general we did a lot of chores to button up the place for the change of weather. In other news this week, little Miss Wasabi came down with a runny eye and I had to take her to the rabbit specialist vet in Petaluma. A long drive for her, but he is the best vet around (he has 8 house rabbits of his own!). By the time we got there, her eye had stopped running - so the doctor looked at it anyway and gave her an annual exam since it was almost time for one (we'll have had her in our lives for a year on Oct. 5th- hard to believe! Even harder to believe is how one tiny little creature easily captured our hearts!). He declared her to be totally healthy, just a "tad porky"...she weighs 7.2 pounds. She is on a little diet, but we haven't really told her that it is a diet...don't want the bun to feel deprived!

Waiting around for dinner before the rain came.
Dust bath time!

I want the foreman to build a little breezeway shelter off of the barn so that the donks can take their dust baths even when it is raining.

Paco thoroughly enjoys his dust baths. I love his white tummy!
Hanging out under the kitchen table. She has a good view of the room from this position, and especially a good view of the fridge...usually when I open the fridge she'll hop on over to investigate!

Weegie looks for pine needles to munch on. As you can see, there is no grass left.

Running off to play!

I divide the hay into three feedings throughout the day so the donks don't get too hungry due to the lack of grass. Hopefully now that rain is coming the grass will come back quickly!

As I type this, it is raining and Boulder is sleeping indoors. He hates the rain - doesn't like to get his paws wet!

The tomatoes and peppers are finally ready!

These next couple of photos crack me up. The foreman looks like he's dancing a jig while he spends time with the donkeys!

Double donkey hug.

Carrot treat time!

Luigi doesn't like to take carrots from my hand - or even from the foreman. He is very finicky...while Paco will just snatch it away.

Luigi will try to push the carrot piece out of the foreman's hand first. Silly donk!

To the untrained bunny eye, Wasabi's back legs might look like nothing to take note off...but this is the sign of a very relaxed bun, with her "thumpers" (as we call them) completely stretched out behind her!

A close-up of those mighty thumpers.

Boulder enjoys the sunshine.

Standing up to beg for a treat! Who can resist this face? I gave her a tiny treat, since we're cutting back.

Sweet grain time!

Must be tough fitting in so many naps.

Play time before dinner.

It is so much fun to watch the donkeys play...you just have to make sure to stay out of the way!

Solo snuggles down.

On a beautiful blue-skied day before the weather changed.

Three deer help themselves to the passion flower plant early in the morning.

The morning routine!
